Corum began as an ambitious project by Gaston Ries, a Swiss businessman with a passion for watches. In 1955, he created the first nucleus of what would soon become the Corum factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds. He called upon his nephew René Bannwart, who had worked for Patek Philippe and especially Omega as head of the design department. Together, they implemented a completely new vision of luxury haute horlogerie, focused on the preciousness of materials, imaginative and eclectic design, and obsessive attention to detail. The name "Corum" (derived from the Latin "Quorum") first appeared in June 1955, associated with the registration of another name, "Seducta." "Corum" alone was registered on September 29, 1955. The brand's logo, an upward-pointing key, is instantly recognizable and immediately captured the collective imagination as a symbol of extreme quality and opulent, whimsical luxury. In the mid-1970s, Corum burst onto the world of water-resistant watches with a now-famous series dedicated to the Admiral's Cup, the sailing regatta that first took place in 1957 in Great Britain and last in Australia in 2023. This Corum X Riva demonstrates this connection between the brand and the sea. Riva is, in fact, the signature of one of the most historic Italian builders of sailing and motor boats. Founded in 1842 by Pietro Riva, the company continues to build extraordinary luxury vessels to this day. This limited edition of 33 Corum Calendar for Riva models, of which this piece is the first, was produced in the mid-2000s.
